Here is a laptop I recommended today for my sister. I strongly recommend Windows XP operating system, dual-core processor (or better), 2GB RAM (or more) and dual-layer DVD burner. Windows 7 is about to be released (October 22) and I have been very pleased with the pre-release copy I've been using for a few months now, but I still recommend XP if you can get it. Either way, Vista was a bust, avoid it if you can.

I rarely buy extended warranties, but with laptops it is something to consider because people carry them around so much: Standard warranty is 30 days. $55 for 1 year and $80 for two years. Tough call on that, but if you drop it, hindsight might prove it to be a wise investment. Most of the computers we see with hardware problems are laptops.
